Take this fantastic opportunity to interact with and make a real difference to the lives of children orphaned by AIDS within this vibrant Zulu community. This project is based in a rural community near Fishhoek/Simonstown on the outskirts of Cape Town. Volunteers will become involved in pre-school and possibly primary school education as well as a number of community development initiatives. The classrooms are ill equiped but the children are very enthusiastic with a real desire to learn. A wonderful opportunity to work with young disadvantaged children and help on valuable programmes that will benfit the community for years to come.

Located in the heart of the Okonjima Game Reserve this exciting project works alongside the world's largest Big Cat Welfare Programme, committed to the long term conservation and release of Namibia's large carnivores, especially cheetahs and leopards.    By choosing this project volunteers will be undertaking essential reserve maintenance tasks including bush-clearance with the ultimate aim of allowing the animals cared for to run around more freely in a balanced ecosystem.  Volunteers as well as helping with various tasks at the Big Cat Welfare Programme will take part in a multitude of exciting activities including leopard tracking, cheetah tracking by foot, bushman walks, birding and game drives and possibly rescuing animals in distress.  This is a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes and be involved in the work of the Big Cat Welfare Programme which is home to more than 100 big cats. more...

This Cape Town orphanage is a very special home, which provides an interim place of safety and care for babies (birth to 24 months) for a short period of time until they can be placed in a suitable home. The children come from diverse backgrounds, some abandoned in dustbins, others abused, neglected, raped or infected with HIV. Volunteers are so important to this project and will play an integral part in caring for these children. Volunteers will assist and observe in local clinics and communities in Red Hill, Masiphumelele, Seawinds, Fish Hoek and Ocean View each morning and in various rural pre-schools and day care centres through the afternoon community work. Volunteers on this project will work together with local Kenyans as part of an ongoing community development programme in a coastal primary school and surrounding village, with the aim of improving the lives of the local population by helping the community to become self-sufficient. Volunteers will be involved in improving existing facilities and helping to build new ones.  There may also be opportunities for sports coaching. Roaming the world’s oceans, the Great White Shark is undoubtedly the greatest predatory force of the seas. Cloaked in myth, misunderstanding and fear, this majestic animal remains a mystery to man.  This project offers a unique opportunity to view the Great White Shark in its natural environment, either from a boat or an underwater cage. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to see other wildlife species, including Cape Gannets, Bryde Whales, Cape Fur Seals, Dolphins and Jackass Penguins.  Volunteers will learn a lot about the Great White and then put that knowledge to use by assisting in conservation and research into this awesome animal. more...

Volunteer on this beautiful Eastern Cape Big 5 Game Reserve, where you will play an integral park in the reserves varied wildlife conservation work. On this fantastic project, situated in Zimbabwe's rolling bushveld, volunteers work towards restoring the black rhino population to its previous glory. This highly successful breeding programme aims to reintroduce as many black rhino back into their natural habitat as possible. Volunteers may help on the maternity ward, in the under fives department, with AIDS support groups or community outreach. Volunteers will also spend time on worthwhile local community projects. This is a great project where volunteers not only play an integral and hands-on part in helping with the health care needs of this Zambian community but will also leave with a real insight into medicine in a third world country. This immensely worthwhile project offers volunteers an opportunity to experience "real" Africa in ways that will never be forgotten. Volunteers with a medical inclination can help in the Kikuyu Hospital, a busy place treating more than 350 patients each day where there will be opportunities to observe eye surgery or to help in the maternity unit or on orthopaedic wards. HIV and AIDS has created more than one million orphans in Kenya and the orphanages and homes in Limuru welcome volunteers who can offer much needed one-to-one attention for the youngsters - aged between 4 and 10 years of age - many of whom are suffering from developmental problems and who need a little love and care to come into their young lives. Or decide to make a real difference to the lives of the people who live in the slums of Nairobi where mortality is high as is unemployment and disease. Here volunteers can help in the local clinic or accompany the medical staff on visits to rural communities. The list is endless - and volunteers are desperately needed to help with all these projects.

During this varied two-week programme, based along the beautiful Okovango River, volunteers will be involved in activities ranging from bird ringing to fishing, and from garden maintenance to community development in the form of craft training and AIDS/HIV clinic help.  In short, it will be a working holiday that allows volunteers to understand the beautiful area in which they are working both ecologically and socially. The Big 5 Wildlife Conservation Expedition is a varied and exciting adventure, allowing volunteers to explore this beautiful country whilst making a contribution to the conservation of both the land and the wildlife it supports.  The expedition commences  with volunteers canoeing steadily along the powerful Zambezi River from the thundering Victoria Falls, whilst exploring interesting channels that lead to tiny islands.  Volunteers then speed past grazing animals and flocks of birds whilst negotiating the fast rapids that occur in some parts of the river. The second week is spent at the world-famous Hwange National Park, where volunteers will join a Bush Awareness Course and learn all there is to know about the African bush.  Volunteers will then spend some relaxing days at the Lion Rehabilitation Headquarters in Gweru, horseback riding, walking with lions, canoeing, and elephant training!  At the end of this adventure, volunteers use their recently acquired conservation and care skills at the Imire Black Rhino Conservancy, looking after these wonderful but endangered animals. more...

A volunteer project for those with a real love of horses.  This horse sanctuary offers a safe haven for horses who have been abused and neglected from all over South Africa.  Volunteers will help to care for horses including assisting any veterinary activities and post operative care, feeding, grooming, tack maintenance and general care of the animals and yard.  Exercising the horses in the near by Game Reserve is a real highlight of the project where you will get to experience Africa whilst helping the horses that have often had a terrible life. more...
