Itinerary

DAY 1 - Victoria Falls to Hwange National Park (L / D)

Leaving Victoria Falls behind the group travels through teak and mopane forests and local villages to Hwange Town, made famous for its coal mining. Camp is set up adjacent to Hwange National Park and an afternoon visit is made to the Hwange wild dog research project where more is learned about these misunderstood predators. Hwange is Zimbabwe’s oldest and largest National Park and is home to approximately 100 animal species and over 400 different types of bird.

DAY 2 - Hwange National Park (B / L / D)

After an early start, the morning is spent exploring Hwange to see what makes it Zimbabwe’s premier National Park. The rest of the day is spent  in search of some of Hwange’s wildlife population, including the Big 5 – lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant. Hwange has a diverse landscape - from open grassland to Kalahari sand in the southern area of the park to the hillier, heavily wooded areas in the north.  Stops are made at many of the artificial boreholes/waterholes where herds of game congregate to slake their thirst.  Some have viewing platforms where there will be an opportunity to stretch the legs and gaze in awe at Africa’s magnificent wildlife.  Then the group will return to camp on the boundary of the National Park for sundowners and a well earned rest.

DAY 3 - Hwange National Park to Victoria Falls (B)

After breakfast a start is made on the return journey to Victoria Falls.  Not far from the camp a visit will be made to a local community primary school project, where it will be possible to interact with the local people and learn about their lives, work and education in this wilderness area.  The group then makes its way back to Victoria Falls after having had a brief glimpse of what makes Africa so magical.

Orientation

An information pack will be sent upon booking this trip and our staff are always on hand to offer further advice and information via telephone and email before departure. An optional pre-departure meeting is provided which is a great opportunity to meet your trip companions.

Accommodation and Meals

These are camping trips, and spacious 2-person tents with sewn in ground sheets and a separate fly sheet are provided.  Most nights the group will stay in organised campsites which usually have hot water showers and extra facilities such as a bar or swimming pool.  Increasingly these places have simple roomed accommodation, so there may be the choice, at an extra cost, to upgrade to a bed if wished.  Occasionally, if it is impossible to drive any further or when there is no local campsite available, it may be necessary to bush camp.  The vehicles used are completely self-sufficient for this and camping out in the middle of the African bush can be a memorable experience.

The safari cook does all the cooking on the trip, although it may be necessary to participate in the preparation of the meals on a rota basis.  Meals and menus vary depending on what is available locally, but three healthy square meals a day on the road are provided.   Fresh fruit and vegetables are purchased  from market stalls along the way, which is supported by a bulk purchase of goods prior to departure.  In the towns and cities there is the optional alternative of sampling the local restaurants.
