Baphumelele Childrens Oprhanagefrom £895 (6 weeks)

Cape Town, South AfricaRef: AV037

Volunteers to Baphumelele can play an active role in the development of young children at this world famous home based right in the heart of Khayelitsha, the largest township of Cape Town and home to over 1 million people.  Visits and donations from celebrities such as Sir Elton John, Beyonce Knowles, U2's Bono and the Manchester United Football Team have provided great publicity and new buildings have sprung up allowing the children to be looked after in family groups of about eight - each with a housemother and several "brothers and sisters".  This has enhanced the feeling of "belonging" and certainly improves the lives of the children lucky enough to have found a home here.  There is a real need for volunteers who can help to look after the younger children (0 - 5 years) with washing, feeding, laundry etc as well as contributing to the ongoing transformation of Baphumelele itself. This project will particularly suit emotionally mature volunteers who would like to make a positive difference to the lives of a wonderful group of young children.

The spread of the HIV/AIDS pandemic is having a huge effect, particularly in southern Africa.  More than 14 million children world-wide have lost either one or both parents to AIDS and this number seems set to rise further over the next few years as many parents infected with HIV develop AIDS.  It is estimated that this year there will be 2.5 million children in South Africa alone who will have been orphaned by this epidemic and have been abandoned and abused as a result.

The Children's Home at Baphumelele was established in 2001 as a centre to care for these abused and abandoned children and has since then provided a safe and loving place for those who would otherwise face a life on the streets.  There is no discrimination on age or medical grounds, and all children who are in need are accepted.  To-day Baphumelele is home to approximately 150 chilren ranging from newborn to 18 years of age and volunteers work mainly with those in the 0 - 5 years age group helping the permanent staff who are mainly of Xhosa and Sotho origin.

This is a very special project which will especially suit mature volunteers who are looking to make a real difference to these wonderful little children. The project is open to volunteers aged 18 years or above on arrival who can spend between 6 - 12 weeks.  Previous experience of working with young children is an advantage but not essential.

Daily Routine

Volunteers work in teams on shifts of 3 days at Baphumelele, staying overnight at the volunteer flat at the Home.  This is followed by 3 days off, staying in the volunteer accommodation in Observatory, which gives plenty of free time to explore the exciting city of Cape Town.  Working days start at 7.00 am and finish around 7.00 pm, but with plenty of breaks in the day and an opportunity to relax during the evenings.  During the working day volunteers will  take part in the following activities:

  • Assisting the permanent staff with daily tasks such as preparing feed bottles and meals, washing up, changing the beds and hanging out laundry.
  • Helping the children with teeth brushing, getting ready for school and bath time.
  • Joining in structured play with the younger children (0 - 5 years).

There are plenty of other tasks if time allows such as cleaning up areas of the grounds, painting and decorating, working in the kitchen garden etc.  There are also occasional outings and fun activities at weekends which appreciate help from the volunteers.

Optional Excursions

There is plenty to see and do in Cape Town - one of the most beautiful cities in the world.  Sports enthusiasts can choose from nearly every water and land-based sport imaginable - or watch cricket or rugby at Sahara Park Newlands International Stadium.  There are opportunities to try shark cage diving, sky diving, paragliding or abseiling from Table Mountain or volunteers can just explore the city and its many museums or perhaps taste some great South African wine at a nearby estate.  The Artscape Theatre in Cape Town has a year round programme of ballet, shows and plays and many international singers and bands play at the Grand West Arena.  There are also many overland tours to connect with the rest of South Africa, Kruger National Park, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and beyond.  Why not talk to Amanzi Travel about taking an Overland Tour at the end of your placement?

Getting There

Volunteers should fly into Cape Town International Airport where they will be met by a local representative and transferred to the volunteer house in Observatory (a suburb of Cape Town).  Volunteers should ensure that they arrive in time to join the project on a Monday. Accommodation for additional nights can be arranged if necessary through Amanzi Travel.

Amanzi Travel holds an ATOL licence and we can arrange any flight requirements that you have upon request.

Why visit South Africa?

Every country in the world displays some diversity, but South Africa, stretching from the hippos in the Limpopo River to the penguins waddling on the Cape, takes some beating. There’s the deserted Kalahari, Namakwa’s springtime symphony of wildflowers, iconic Table Mountain and Cape Point, Africa’s biggest game reserve - Kruger National Park - boasting the most mammal species of any game reserve, and the magnificent peaks and plunging valleys of the escarpment of Drakensberg.

Cape Town is widely described as one of the world's most beautiful cities. Some of its more famous landmarks include Table Mountain, Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for decades), Cape Point, Chapman’s Peak, Kirstenbosch Gardens and the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. A combination of historical coastal charm and urbane sophistication, Cape Town has some of the finest beaches and is also the gateway to the lush Cape Winelands, famous for world-renowned wines. From here, it is an easy journey to the Whale Route, where Southern Right whales can be seen (June - November) and humpback whales, Bryde's whales, Minke whales and bottlenose dolpins can be viewed year round.

The Garden Route is renowned for its beaches, indigenous forests, nature reserves, lakes, mountain ranges, adventure opportunities and hiking trails. Plettenberg Bay is a relaxed beach paradise with spectacular walks and hikes where one can watch dolphins and whales on eco-marine cruises. With some of the world's finest beaches, the Eastern Cape's untouched and pristine coastline also has a rich social, cultural and political history. Port Elizabeth is the gateway to the Eastern Cape, and the perfect complement to the Garden Route. Cape St Francis is situated on the Indian Ocean coastline, in and around Africa's largest man made web of canals and waterways, and is renowned for its long, sandy beaches, surfing, rock fishing and tranquil lifestyle.

Kruger National Park is the flagship of South Africa's game reserves, offering an unrivalled wildlife experience over two million-hectares. Private concessions operating within and alongside Kruger National Park feature luxurious, exclusive game lodges with many exciting safari activities. Some of these lodges are unfenced, allowing for the free movement of wildlife. Madikwe Game Reserve, in the North West province, is one of South Africa's largest private Big Five game reserves and features numerous lodges and camps. The Waterberg area in the northwest is also malaria-free and is aptly named for its strong streams that flow even in dry seasons, making for excellent game viewing. Both reserves are great for those seeking an accessible malaria-free wilderness experience.

Durban is a sub-tropical city and the gateway to KwaZulu-Natal. It offers a unique mix of Zulu, Indian and colonial cultures. Visit the Anglo-Zulu battlefields, take a fascinating glimpse into Zulu culture, hike in the beautiful Drakensberg Mountains, dive the reefs, marine and coastal reserves of Maputaland, as well as experience Big Five game reserves. The Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve is renowned for saving the white rhino from the brink of extinction, and Phinda Private Game Reserve is well known for its award-winning lodges and conservation initiatives.

Johannesburg meaning "Place of Gold", is South Africa's economic powerhouse. This vibrant and cosmopolitan city is home to many attractions including the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill, and also offers shopping from world-class to atmospheric curio markets. Known as the "Jacaranda City", the state capital of Pretoria features beautiful blossoming trees, significant old buildings and fascinating museums, including the Transvaal Museum, home of Mrs Ples, the australopithecine fossil found at the Cradle of Humankind.

Highlights of South Africa

  • Breathtaking scenery, quaint coastal villages, cosmopolitan cities, wine routes and exclusive bush lodges.
  • Exciting Big Five safaris in unspoilt wilderness areas.
  • Malaria-free game viewing and sunshine all year round.
  • See Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was held in prison for 27 years.
  • Go up Table Mountain by cable car for stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and beautiful Cape Town.
  • Whale watching and great white shark cage diving.
  • Beautiful, pristine beaches perfect for swimming and sunbathing.
  • The Cradle of Humankind: Sterkfontein is one of the world's most productive and important palaeoanthropological sites.

Climate

For Johannesburg:

Seasons Max Min
Summer (September - April) 25 °C 10 °C
Winter (May - August) 19 °C 4 °C
Rainfall: October to March, with November to January heaviest

South Africa has typical seasons of weather for the southern hemisphere, with the coldest days in July-August. The Benguela Current, a cold motion that moves from the lower South Atlantic Ocean, causes moderate temperatures on the West Coast. On the central plateau, which includes Free State and Gauteng provinces, the altitude keeps the average temperatures below 30 °C.
In winter, also due to altitude, temperatures drop to freezing point, and in some places, even lower. Heavy snows have fallen recently for the first time in decades in Johannesburg. During winter, it is warmest in the coastal regions, especially on the Eastern Indian Ocean coast and Garden Route, where it has year round mild weather with occasional rain. As winter is cooler and drier, it is more suitable for hiking and outdoor pursuits, and is also a good time for game viewing as vegetation is less dense and thirsty animals congregate around rivers and other permanent water sources.

In summer, South Africa experiences the hottest temperatures and this is generally when most rain falls, October – March. However, there is one exception -  the Western Cape, which is a winter-rain area that enjoys a Mediterranean climate (average 26°C).

Christmas to mid-January, and Easter are the height of the peak season for visitors.
Autumn (April/May) and Spring (mid-Sept to November) are ideal almost everywhere.

Baphumelele Childrens Oprhanage

As a more mature volunteer with no previous experience of volunteering I was somewhat apprehensive when embarking upon my recent adventure.  I had been wanting to work with the poor children in Africa for some time but had no real idea of where to go or what to expect.  Amanzi Travel changed all that!  From my very first telephone conversation with them I found their expertise and knowledge to be first class.  Their suggestion that I spend two months at the Baphumelele Children’s Home ticked all the boxes.  This is a very special place, right in the middle of Khayelitsha – a huge township on the edge of Cape Town.  All the children live in groups – about eight children  - “brothers and sisters” – each with a housemother.  And these are the lucky children – there are hundreds more on the streets outside looking through the railings!   Luckily Baphumelele has attracted donations from the likes of  Sir Elton John, Beyonce Knowles and Bono and more homes are being built all the time.  All volunteers are welcome here but they are especially pleased to see mature volunteers who can commit between six and twelve weeks – this gives plenty of time to really get to know the children and you feel that you are making a real difference.  All volunteers work in teams on a shift basis – three days on and three days off.  The working days are long and hard but then there are three days to get out and about in Cape Town (the most beautiful city I have ever seen) and see some of the sights.

Amanzi Travel offered help and support all the way through.  They were able to book my flights – direct from London to Cape Town – and advise on appropriate insurance.  I knew that I would be picked up at the airport when I arrived which was very important to me as I was travelling alone.   I cannot rate them highly enough and I am looking forward to another “adventure” with them next year.
