General Information

Your Guide

Emil von Maltitz will be leading this safari.  Emil was born and raised in South Africa and is a professional nature and fine art photographer with a great love for the African bush.  Hois photographs have appeared in magazines, textbooks and advertisements around the world and he supplies stock companies such as Getty Images and Photographers Direct.  His work can be seen on his company website:  www.limephoto.co.za  and he is experienced in teaching photography skills to beginners.  He will be available throughout the trip for questions, advice and inspiration.

The Locations

The safari will visit two game reserves in South Africa; Djuma Private Game Reserve and Tshukudu Game Lodge - both wonderful locations guaranteeing spectacular wildlife viewing.

Djuma Private Game Reserve

This reserve is situated in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve which is part of the Greater Kruger National Park, and offers some of the best game viewing in Africa with the chance of encountering all of the "Big Five" (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino).  The photographic opportunities will be amazing.  The area is famous for its sightings of the big cats, so be prepared to capture images of lions, cheetahs and leopards.  There will be 2 x 3 hour game drives a day - one early in the morning and one in the late afternoon, to make the best use of the beautiful light during the African sunrise and sunset.  Emil will accompany all game drives together with a professional bush guide, so that you will learn all about the African bush as well as capturing its beauty with your camera.  Other activities such as walking safaris and visits to local villages will be offered and at Djuma you will receive five star service.  The accommodation will be at Galapo Camp - an exclusive, private and fully serviced lodge, with luxurious rooms, a refreshing pool and amazing food.

Tshukudu Game Lodge

This is a family-run safari lodge combining home comfort with the "Big Five" safari experience.  As well as game drives Tshukudu offers close contact with wildlife at its lion breeding and wildlife rehabilitation project which aim to rescue lions and re-introduce them, or the next generation, into other game reserves.  As well as helping to ensure generations of healthy lions to come, Tshukudu has gained a reputation for raising orphaned animals and everything from birds and squirrels to elephants and giraffe have been given a second chance through this animal rehabilitation project.  Getting to see the animals in this project, the young lion cubs in the breeding progamme and the tame cheetah called Savannah will all help to make this a unique experience - and a wildlife photographer's dream.

Workshops

A series of workshops, led by Emil, will be offered throughout the safari and will form building blocks to understanding digital cameras and the techniques needed for successful wildlife photography.  The seminars will include:  "Understanding the Digital Camera"; "Understanding Exposure with Digital Cameras" and "Composition in Wildlife Photography".  The days will consist of practical photography, seminars and period of review which will all enable you to put into practice what has been learned, to see and discuss the results and to receive professional feedback.
