General Information
Predator population in Namibia, a country of great natural beauty, is at an all time low with many breeds facing the threat of extinction. This Wildlife Foundation is dedicated to supporting and conserving the environment and provides a safe home, medical treatment and rehabilitation to all animals brought into its care. It is located in the Omaheke Region in the central east of Namibia and the nearest major town is Gobabis, the capital city of the region. The Omaheke Region lies in a vast area known as the Kalahari Desert which encompasses the eastern part of Namibia, most of Botswana and parts of South Africa and contains various eco-regions ranging from desert, to savannah, seasonal swampland and sandveld. It is in the latter that the Foundation is located and the area has a summer rainfall climate. Spring starts in September with a new rainy season but the majority of rain does not fall until January, in the form of thundershowers. The rainy season continues into April, start of the Namibian winter, which is a very dry period with cold nights but generally warm days.
The “Working Guest” programme has been developed to offer people from all over the world the opportunity to carry out daily animal care, as well as generating income to contribute towards the homing and rehabilitation of the many sick animals that arrive daily.
Participants on this programme will work in small groups (no bigger than 12) with a dedicated ranger and take part in the following activities:
Animal Interaction
This part of the programme covers all aspects of animal husbandry including feeding, grooming, caretaking and interaction with the more than 300 wild animals at the reserve, ranging from the smallest surricat and baby baboon to the larger lions, leopards, cheetahs and wild dogs.
Experiencing Nature
An opportunity for the volunteer to experience and enjoy the magnificent beauty of Africa while taking part in guided nature walks, bush sleep outs and walking with the animals in the African bush. There will also be opportunities to enjoy leisure time and benefit from the natural environment.
Farm Activities
The Wildlife Foundation is situated in 10,000 hectares of wild African bush and much work is needed to ensure its smooth operation. This part of the programme will allow volunteers to assist with field research on released wildlife, game patrols, game counts and observations and upgrading of animal enclosures.
Community
The Foundation is surrounded by lands which are home to the unique and threatened Bushman community. Volunteers will be able to take part in bushman school activities, bushman art – including beading and eggshell jewellery making – as well as an introduction to the traditional lifestyle of the bushmen and the opportunity to enjoy bush walks with them to observe their tracking skills and their ability to survive in the bush.
Leisure
An opportunity to enjoy leisure time and make new friends – perhaps horseriding, swimming, trail walking, sundowner excursions and of course incredible photographic opportunities.
All volunteers should be aware that they will be visiting an ever-evolving environment where the needs of the animals must be put first.
