Community Development Volunteer Projects

Take this fantastic opportunity to interact with and make a real difference to the lives of children orphaned by AIDS within this vibrant Zulu community. Volunteers will have the chance not only to become intimately involved in the day to day lives of these orphans but to make a lasting difference to the community with development and HIV/AIDS education work. Home for the duration of the project will be St Lucia, heart of the energetic Zulu community. St Lucia is set in one of the most diverse areas on the planet where five separate ecosystems make this a truly unique region; in 1999 the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park was honored to be declared a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site.

This project is based in a rural community near Fishhoek/Simonstown on the outskirts of Cape Town. Volunteers will become involved in pre-school and possibly primary school education as well as a number of community development initiatives. The classrooms are ill equiped but the children are very enthusiastic with a real desire to learn. A wonderful opportunity to work with young disadvantaged children and help on valuable programmes that will benfit the community for years to come.

Although Zanzibar is a beautiful tropical paradise, its local communities are badly affected by poverty, lack of education and training and unemployment.  By getting involved in local nursery, primary and secondary school education, tourism training schools and environmental programmes to help the local communities, volunteers have many opportunities to make a real impact on the lives of the people affected by these problems.

This Cape Town orphanage is a very special home, which provides an interim place of safety and care for babies (birth to 24 months) for a short period of time until they can be placed in a suitable home. The children come from diverse backgrounds, some abandoned in dustbins, others abused, neglected, raped or infected with HIV. Volunteers are so important to this project and will play an integral part in caring for these children. Volunteers will assist and observe in local clinics and communities in Red Hill, Masiphumelele, Seawinds, Fish Hoek and Ocean View each morning and in various rural pre-schools and day care centres through the afternoon community work. Volunteers on this project will work together with local Kenyans as part of an ongoing community development programme in a coastal primary school and surrounding village, with the aim of improving the lives of the local population by helping the community to become self-sufficient. Situated in Livingstone, a stones throw from the world famous Victoria Falls, volunteers gain a unique insight into the field of medicine in Zambia by assisting the medical staff in three Livingstone Clinics. Volunteers may help on the maternity ward, in the under fives department, with AIDS support groups or community outreach. Volunteers will also spend time on worthwhile local community projects. This is a great project where volunteers not only play an integral and hands-on part in helping with the health care needs of this Zambian community but will also leave with a real insight into medicine in a third world country. This immensely worthwhile project offers volunteers an opportunity to experience "real" Africa in ways that will never be forgotten. Volunteers with a medical inclination can help in the Kikuyu Hospital, a busy place treating more than 350 patients each day where there will be opportunities to observe eye surgery or to help in the maternity unit or on orthopaedic wards. HIV and AIDS has created more than one million orphans in Kenya and the orphanages and homes in Limuru welcome volunteers who can offer much needed one-to-one attention for the youngsters - aged between 4 and 10 years of age - many of whom are suffering from developmental problems and who need a little love and care to come into their young lives. Or decide to make a real difference to the lives of the people who live in the slums of Nairobi where mortality is high as is unemployment and disease. Here volunteers can help in the local clinic or accompany the medical staff on visits to rural communities. The list is endless - and volunteers are desperately needed to help with all these projects.
